BROKEN PIECES

A new original musical by Darrin Yalacki and Laura Lineback

Broken Pieces expands upon the emotional complexities of a strained mother-daughter relationship shaped by dementia, memory loss, and caregiving, first introduced in the one-act musical Losing Memory, and presented at Write Act Repertory in the summer of 2025.

This new full-length work reimagines and deepens the story through new music, new material, and an evolved narrative structure. The project is currently undergoing continued writing and development for future workshops and production opportunities.

Laura Lineback

Composer

Laura Lineback is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist with an MFA from Syracuse University. A Fremont, California native originally trained in painting, Laura began writing music during graduate school when her urge to paint transformed into song. Teaching herself a few chords has since blossomed into original songwriting and composing for one-act musicals.

Her practice spans public sculpture, musical composition, and even playing Pantalone in The Clown School’s 2025 Spring production of Torn Asunder, a Commedia dell’arte show. Each project Laura undertakes is driven more by concept than by medium.

Drawing on personal family experiences with dementia, she and Darrin use Losing Memory and now Broken Pieces, to reflect on changes in identity and the delicate process of losing someone while they are still here.
